The priests in earlier times divided people into categories called varnas. According to these categories, each varna belonged to a different social strata. There were 4 varnas in total. The last varna consisted of the shudras, who had to serve the other three varna and could not perform any rituals. Often, women were also grouped with the shudras and were not allowed to perform ritual sacrifices. 

4. Why did the Kings fortify their kingdoms?

Forts were built by kings because they wanted to protect themselves against probable attacks by other kings. And some rulers wanted to flaunt their wealth by building tall and impressive walls around their respective kingdoms. Moreover, by fortifying the boundaries, the king also gained more control of the people residing in his kingdom. These are all reasons behind kings fortifying their kingdoms.
