Samudragupta was a famous ruler belonging to the Guptas dynasty. We came to know about the details of Samudragupta from a long inscription which is actually a poem written in Sanskrit. The poem was composed by Harisena who was Samudragupta’s court poet. At Allahabad, it was inscribed on the Ashokan pillar. This inscription is known as Prashasti. Prashasti is a Sanskrit word meaning ‘in praise of’. So, here the court poet Harisena has praised the king– as a warrior as well as a king who won many victories in the battle and was also knowledgeable.
6. What do you know about Harshavardhana? Describe the main events of his career in accordance with Chapter 11 of Class 6 History.
Approximately 1400 years ago, Harshavardhana ruled and we came to know about him from his biography known as Harshacharita which is in Sanskrit and was written by Banabhatta who was his court poet. There is also another source through which we know about him is Xuan Zang’s account which he left behind him. After his father and elder brother died, Harshavardhana became the ruler of Thanesar. When Harshavardhana brother-in-law was killed by the Bengal ruler, he took over the kingdom of Kanauj and an army was led by him against the Bengal ruler.
