In present-day Pakistan and in India, the early cities of the Indian subcontinent are found by archaeologists. In India, the early cities are found in states like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Western parts of Uttar Pradesh and Punjab. Also, in almost all these cities, archaeologists have found a set of unique objects like Red pottery which have been painted with designs in black, special beads, seals with writing, stone weights, long stone blades and copper tools. 

6. Describe the main features of the Great Bath of Mohenjodaro.


The main features are:

  • A very special public water tank was found in Mohenjodaro which archaeologists called the Great Bath. 

  • The Great Bath was built in its Citadel Area. 

  • It was built of bricks and coated with plaster. And also with a layer of natural tar, it was made watertight.

  • On all the sides of the Great Bath, there were rooms and from the two sides, there were steps leading down to it.

  • The Great Bath was filled with water which might probably be brought in from a well and after use, it was drained out. Probably, only important people on special occasions took a dip in this tank.

7. What were the causes of the end of the Harappan culture?


The following causes might be responsible for the end of the Harappan culture –

  • Some scholars suggested that it might have ended because the rivers dried up.

  • While others suggest that deforestation might have taken place as fuel was required for melting copper ores and for baking bricks. Apart from that, green lands might have been destroyed due to extensive grazing by large herds of cattle, sheep and goats.

  • Some suggested that there were floods in some areas.

  • Maybe, the rulers lost control.

None of the above reasons can explain the exact reason for the end of all the cities. We can say that no one is the same about the end of Harappan culture.
