Ch 7 Hornbill Class 11 by Jayant Narlikar explains the complexities of catastrophe theory, where a small alteration of circumstances can bring behaviour change. Professor Gangadhar Gaitonde is a character who on his 1000th public speaking function meets with an accident and experiences a new world.
This world has variables that prove lack of determinism in Quantum theory like Marathas winning the Battle of Panipat and East India Company leaving after the events of 1857. NCERT Solutions for Class 11 English Hornbill Chapter 7 The Adventure try to simplify complex theory of a parallel universe as seen by professor Gaitonde.
Professor Gaitonde envisions a world where history is different from a fact as collision made the neurons of his brain react.
1. Why Couldn't Gangadhar Believe in the History he was Watching Around?
Professor Gaitonde couldn't believe in the history he was witnessing as here facts seemed to change from one he read. After getting hit by a truck, the professor in his unconscious state experienced a world which was apart from the real world.
He saw Marathas winning The Battle of Panipat as bullets escaped Viswas Rao which in reality was the opposite. Moreover, he witnessed an independent India after the events of 1857 rebellion.
These incidents made him doubt his existence as the facts seemed distorted and different from the one he knew.
2. What Outcome did Rajendra Determine from Professor Gaitonde's Story?
After hearing Gaitonde's story, Rajendra Despande determined two causes for the experience. The scientific theories were catastrophic theory and the lack of determinism in Quantum theory.
Catastrophic theory states that a small change in circumstance can bring alteration in behaviour. Rajendra says that Gaitonde experienced Marathas winning the Battle of Panipat as the bullet missed Viswas Rao was a catastrophe.
Similarly, determinism in Quantum theory states electrons orbiting a nucleus of an atom are unpredictable. Just as levels of energy can make a jump into transition, Professor Gaitonde made a transition to a world where variables were one of his choices.
3. What is a Catastrophic Theory?
A catastrophic theory is a special branch of dynamic system theory developed by a French mathematician Rene Thom in 1960. This theory suggests a sudden shift of behaviour arising from small changes in circumstances. Its primary method of this theory is to find dynamic variables in slow and fast. Here the stability features of a fast variable may alter with a dynamic of a slow variable.
Catastrophes are generally different bifurcations between fixed-point attractors and are classified based on several control parameters being varied. This theory can be applied to determine possibilities of a parallel world residing side by side with reality.
