Tamil Nadu State Education Board

Tamil Nadu is the largest South Indian state, which is known as one among the literate state in our country. As per the 2011 records, the rate of literacy in this state ranges from 80 to 81%, which is estimated above the national average. According to the education surveys for schools, students and teachers, Tamil Nadu state ranked number one position among all other Indian states.

The Tamil Nadu Education Board is one of the oldest and the dominating education systems in India.  The origin of the Education Department was first established in the year 1826 by the Governor of Madras Province named Sir Thomas Munro. The main objective of the Board is to have the highest literacy both in the Tamil Nadu state and all over India. The first high school was opened in the year 1841, the State Secondary Education was established and in the year 1910 and the first SSLC Public Examination conducted all over the Tamil Nadu state was in the year 1911.

Education System in Tamil Nadu

The minimum entry age for those students joining pre-primary classes should be between the age group of 3 to 4 years. The structure of education in the Tamil Nadu state is mainly based on the national level pattern which includes 12 years of schooling, consisting of pre-primary, primary, middle, higher and followed by the secondary school of education. Later, students are free to pursue their higher secondary school of education either at the university or in colleges by selecting any of the general academic streams and other technical courses offered by their respective colleges or universities.

The Tamil Nadu State Board of Education evaluates the student performance and their improvement by conducting two different board exams –class 10 and class 12 before moving to their vocational courses and higher studies.

Chennai, the capital city of Tamil Nadu state is called as the home for many educational and research institutions. Altogether, the Tamil Nadu State has 2,550 schools, 1,150 colleges, and 37 universities.

In the year 2002, TN board of Education established a new board for school examination by merging the existing two different boards -Board of Secondary Education and Board of Higher Secondary Examinations and was named as Tamil Nadu Board of Secondary Education. The other streams include:

  1. The Anglo India stream.
  2. The Matriculation stream.
  3. OSLC – The Oriental School Leaving Certificate.
  4. SSLC – Secondary School Leaving Certificate stream.
  5. HSC – Higher Secondary Certificate stream for class 11th and 12th.

The Curriculum or the Subjects for TN Board

There are both Tamil medium and English medium schools which are run both by the government and private education system and are affiliated to the CBSE, ICSE, TN State Board or the T Matriculation board. The main subjects for class 1 to 10 include – Hindi, English, Tamil, Mathematics, Environmental Science (for class I-III), Science (from III-X) and Social Science.

Tamil Nadu Board Exams and Results

The main exams of SSLC and HSC are generally held in between the month of March, and April and supplementary exams in the month of June and October. The other exams are conducted by the Tamil Nadu board according to the school standards. The results are released in between the month of June and July. Formerly, TNSCERT was referred to as the State Institute of Education (SIE). It was established in 1965 and was responsible for resolution of problems related to school education, under the purview of Directorate of School Education.
