EVS Class 5 Chapter 15 explains the difference between the warmth and cold with different simple day-to-day experiments. The chapter starts with the story of a woodcutter and Mian Balishtiye, where Mian Balishtiye is observing the woodcutter and his activity of blowing air from far away. The woodcutter blows air in three different scenarios during the whole episode, which surprises Mian Balishtiye tremendously. 

  • The woodcutter, while cutting the wood in the chilling atmosphere, would keep down his axe and blow air on his hands to make them warm.

  • The woodcutter in the second instance kept a handi filled with potatoes on damp wood and blew air on the fire to help it burn properly. 

  • The woodcutter in the third instance picked out the hot potatoes and blew air from his mouth to make it cool.  

Mian Balistiye asked woodcutter every time he saw him (woodcutter) doing the same for a different reason. He considered this to be a weird behaviour and thought him to be a ghost or djinn. He was unaware that the air coming out of the mouth makes it hot or cold according to the temperature and distance.

When you put your hands at some distance from your mouth and blow, is the air warmer or colder? Explain.

When air is blown on the hands from our mouth from some distance, the air seems to be colder. This is because the warm air from the mouth mixes with the surrounding cold air.

  • Warm and cold air is blown out of the mouth. 

  • Air is blown in different ways. For example, when whistles are made from the wrapper of toffee, a leaf, a balloon, the cap of a pen, etc. The order from loudest to softest whistles goes as- the cap of a pen, any other thing such as whistling through the mouth, by the wrapper of toffee,  a balloon and a leaf.

  • Different musical instruments can be recognized, easily just by hearing their sounds. This is because the sound is affected by the vibrations the instrument produces. Some instruments are used by blowing air into it such as the flute, the mouth organ, etc.

  • The air blown out of the mouth makes the mirror or glass look hazy. The reason being the warm air coming out of the mouth and the cold mirror converts the water vapour from the mouth into little drops of water on the mirror or glass. These make the glass or mirror look hazy. The same logic is applied in cleaning spectacles.
