Indian Cinema reached its peak of creativity and art with films made by Mr Ray. His first directed movie, Pather Panchali in Bangla, was released in 1955 and it earned him honour and prestige at an international level. He was the first Indian director to acquire such an honour at international status. He has made a total of around 30 movies that have not just enriched Indian cinema but also contributed to changing the mindset of critics and other directors to think in a new direction. His films have an amalgam of intellectual content and the simple and innocent lives of kids and animals.

The story in Aroh Class 11 Chapter 3 is based on his experiences while shooting and making Pather Panchali. We get to know many details of the making of this film through this excerpt. It also shows the struggle of an artist to make his creative dream come true, in the absence of money and other means. It tries to take away layers of glamour from the film world and give a glimpse of the stark realities.

Apu ke saath Dhai Saal

The movie Pather Panchali took almost two and a half years to get completed. The shooting was not carried on every day during this entire period as Satyajit Ray was working for an advertising company at that time. Whenever he got some time out of his job, he would resume shooting for this movie. He did not have enough money to carry on shooting continuously; hence shooting would get stalled many times.

The main characters in this movie are Apu and Durga. Apu’s character is that of a 6-year-old boy, and he was unable to find a boy who suited the character. Finally, Satyajit Ji found the boy in his neighbourhood itself. The boy was called Subeer Banerjee. Satyajit Ray did not foresee that the move would take 2.5 years to complete; hence as time went by, he was afraid that kids would grow up and not look their part in the movie. But luckily this did not happen.

The shooting of the movie happened in Palsit, a village near Kolkata. The shooting was carried out near a railway line which was full of wild sugarcane plants. The scene was very big, and it took him 7 days and after 7 days he found out that all the animals had eaten up the wild sugarcane grass. That is why the shooting had to be postponed till the next winter season when the field was again full of wild sugarcane flowers.

There was a dog Bhoolo in the movie and due to lack of money Satyajit Ray had to stop shooting after only half the scenes of this dog were filmed. When he had money to resume shooting, he learned that Bhoolo had died during that gap. After so much struggle, they finally found another dog in the same village that looked exactly like Bhoolo.

Another mishap that happened during the making of Pather Panchali was the death of the person who played the character of Srinivas. They had to find then another person who looked like him and complete the remaining part of the movie. The lack of money also made it tough for him to shoot rain scenes, that is why shooting had to be stopped during the monsoon.

The writer met a lot of older people in the village in the process of the shooting who had different personalities. The house where the shooting was happening was totally in a dilapidated state. The owner of that house stayed in Kolkata. Sound recording was also carried out from the same house. It took them a month to get the house ready for shooting.
