He is one of the most famous writers of Hindi literature and spent his childhood in poverty. He also took part in many movements against Britisher’s oppression along with Mahatma Gandhi. His earlier work was full of romance, imagination, and coincidental anecdotes. He continually progressed his story writing abilities and gradually started writing about social life and was a flagbearer of realistic writing.

His story presented here “Namak ka daroga” is one of his most famous stories. It depicts the victory of righteousness over richness.

Namak ka Daroga

The story is set in the era when Britishers ruled over India. At that time, salt was taxed heavily, and people used it as a means to earn big money by smuggling it. Vanshidhar, a young man from a modest middle-class family, is persuaded by his father to join as an inspector in the government salt department as a salt inspector. His father thinks that earning some extra perks over and above salary is a blessing and is hopeful that as a salt inspector Vanshidhar would be able to earn that.

Vanshidhar is a moralistic man, and despite his father’s instructions to accept a bribe, he remains honest. One night he observes some vehicles crossing the Yamuna river and suspects some foul play like smuggling. He stops the vehicles from crossing the bridge and objects to the whole procedure being carried. The owner of these vehicles is a wealthy and resourceful man, Pundit Alopodin. Alopodin offers a heavy bribe to Vanshidhar so that he allows the passage of illegal vehicles. Vanshidhar knows that Pundit Alopodin is an immensely influential man but irrespective of this fact he arrests Alopodin.

However, as expected in the court, Pundit Alopodin bribes the jury and manages to escape. At the same time, he gets Vanshidhar transferred on the grounds of being rude and misbehaving with him for no reason. This jeopardizes Vanshidhar’s reputation of being an honest man, and he returns home in an unfortunate state.

Everybody at home is angry with Vanshidhar for not accepting the bribe; his wife does not even speak to him for days.

A week after this incident, Pandit Alopodin appears at the doors of Vanshidhar’s house. Vanshidhar expects him to get sarcastic with him and make fun. But instead, Pundit Alopodin came with an offer of a permanent manager’s post of his entire wealth. He was offered a high salary along with many perks like daily living expenses, a horse for his commute, a bungalow to stay in, and many servants.

Vanshidhar accepts the offer and Pundit Alopodin embraces him in the end with happiness.
