Why is magnesium paramagnetic

The magnesium metal is paramagnetic in spite of not having an unpaired electron. Magnesium metal shows very small paramagnetic properties since the application of an external magnetic field changes the population of the spin-up and the spin-down electrons. This results in a small difference in the population and hence magnesium is paramagnetic.
